West Ham United snapped their winless streak from September with a resounding 4-1 victory over Ipswich Town at the London Stadium on Saturday, marking their first home win of the Premier League season.
The match kicked off with an electric atmosphere, and West Ham wasted no time in asserting their dominance.
Just 48 seconds into the game, Michail Antonio netted the quickest goal in the club’s Premier League history, putting the hosts ahead in stunning fashion.
However, the lead was short-lived as Ipswich’s Liam Delap equalized just five minutes later, displaying their intent to compete fiercely.
Despite the early setback, West Ham regained their composure and began to dictate play. Mohammed Kudus almost put them back in front in the 37th minute, meeting Antonio’s curling cross at the back post, but his powerful header struck the post and was cleared away by the Ipswich defense.
Just before half-time, the Hammers finally converted their dominance into a goal. Kudus found the net, showcasing his determination and skill, which reinstated West Ham’s lead. The hosts entered the break with a renewed sense of purpose.
The second half saw West Ham continue to build on their momentum. Captain Jarrod Bowen, who had already been a pivotal figure throughout the match, not only scored but also provided a beautiful assist.
Lucas Paqueta then added the icing on the cake with a stunning goal, sealing the comprehensive victory for West Ham and alleviating the pressure that had been mounting due to their poor form.
For Ipswich Town, managed by Kieran McKenna, the defeat was a tough pill to swallow. The result leaves them winless in the league and precariously positioned just one point above the relegation zone, sitting in 17th place.
Antonio’s opener marked a historic moment, being West Ham’s earliest Premier League goal on record since the 2006-07 season.
Bowen’s performance was equally noteworthy; he became the eighth player in his career to both score and assist in a Premier League game.
Since making his debut for West Ham in February 2020, only five players have managed to achieve this feat more often in the competition.
Kudus celebrated his first league goal of the season, breaking a frustrating drought that saw him attempt 18 shots without success.
Remarkably, prior to this match, only Bruno Fernandes had more attempts (17) without scoring in the current Premier League campaign.
This victory not only boosts West Ham’s standing to 12th place in the early league table but also signifies a much-needed turnaround as they look to build on this performance moving forward.
