John Stones once again delivered in dramatic fashion, scoring a stoppage-time winner as Manchester City narrowly escaped a shock result by defeating struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 in the Premier League on Sunday.
Stones rose to head home a corner in the fifth minute of injury time, sealing all three points for the reigning champions.
The goal was not without controversy, as VAR prompted referee Chris Kavanagh to review the play for potential interference by Bernardo Silva, who was positioned near Wolves’ goalkeeper Jose Sa.
After careful consideration, Kavanagh allowed the goal to stand, much to the frustration of Wolves’ manager Gary O’Neil, who was visibly enraged on the sidelines.
The result was a bitter blow for Wolves, who came agonizingly close to earning just their second point of the season.
City’s victory, on the other hand, propelled them two points clear at the top of the table, ahead of Liverpool’s clash with Chelsea later in the day.
Earlier in the match, City defender Josko Gvardiol leveled the score with a brilliant right-footed strike from outside the box in the 33rd minute, following an early setback.
Wolves, however, showed resilience, fending off relentless waves of City pressure.
Despite the sustained attacks, Wolves appeared poised to hold on for a draw before Stones, who had also scored a dramatic equalizer in the eighth minute of stoppage time against Arsenal last month, came to City’s rescue once again.
The late drama highlighted Stones’ growing reputation for delivering in clutch moments, further solidifying his role as a key figure in Manchester City’s title defense.
