The Enugu State Waste Management Authority has called off the monthly clean-up exercise originally scheduled for Saturday, October 26, 2024.
This decision was made to respect the state-wide funeral rites in honour of the late President-General of the apex Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Water and Waste, Andreas Gebauer, confirmed the cancellation, attributing it to the state’s collective observance of funeral activities for Chief Iwuanyanwu.
Gebauer’s statement specified, “The Enugu State Waste Management Authority has cancelled the state monthly clean-up exercise, which was scheduled to hold on Saturday. The cancellation was due to the state-wide funeral rites in honour of the late President-General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, scheduled to be held the same Saturday, October 26, 2024, in Enugu.”
As part of its advisory, ESWAMA urged residents, known as Ndi Enugu, to continue upholding cleanliness by securing their waste in bags for easier collection.
“All inconveniences regarding the Clean Up cancellation are highly regretted,” the authority added.
Chief Iwuanyanwu’s state funeral will begin on Tuesday, October 29, with the burial set for November 1, 2024.
His passing at age 82, following a brief illness, was confirmed by his son Jide on July 25. Senator Ben Obi, chair of the Central Burial Committee, has indicated that Iwuanyanwu will receive full, exceptional funeral rites, honouring his legacy and contributions to the Igbo community and Nigeria as a whole.
