The arraignment of the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, has been scheduled to take place on July 25 at the Federal High Court in Lagos.
He is facing charges related to the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, as outlined in two counts.
According to one of the lawyers involved in the case, Victor Opara (SAN), the court has issued hearing notices to the respective counsels involved in the matter, as confirmed to Channels Television.
Additionally, it has been verified that a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Joseph Daudu, will be present in court to personally lead the team representing the defendant.
Emefiele is scheduled to appear before Justice Nicholas Oweibo, the vacation judge, for arraignment.
According to the charge sheet, the Federal Government has alleged that Emefiele is in possession of a single-barrel shotgun (JOJEFF MAGNUM 8371) without the necessary licence.
The government contended that the offence is prohibited by Section 4 and penalised by Section 27 (1b) of the Firearms Act, Cap F28 Laws of the Federation 2004.
In the second count, the suspended CBN Governor is accused of violating Section 8 of the Firearms Act Cap F28 Laws of the Federation 2004 by possessing live ammunition (Cartridges) without a licence, which is a crime punished by Section 27 (1)(b)(il) of the same Act.
Since June 10th, when he was taken into custody, Emefiele has been held by DSS.
