Ekiti State Government has warned market traders, particularly in Ado Ekiti, against displaying their goods on the roads.
The Commissioner for Information, Taiwo Olatunbosun, who gave this warning, described this practice as unwholesome and dangerous, noting that it hinders traffic flow.
He also mentioned that it contributes to waste management issues and could lead to accidents, potentially resulting in loss of lives and property.
“Street trading is a major cause for concern and some of the identified problems include traffic congestion, waste management and unhealthy competition over customers and accidents.
“Environmental wastes generated by street traders lead to obstruction of drainage systems leading to flooding during rainfall, road dilapidation with most of the street traders only littering the environment but rarely taking part in cleaning up the mess,” he said.
Olatunbosun explained that the state government had constructed several markets in Ado Ekiti metropolis.
He emphasized that these markets are equipped with proper sanitation facilities, good access roads, and suitable security arrangements.
The Commissioner urged traders to utilize these government-provided facilities by relocating from hazardous roadside locations to more conducive environments, which would enhance their trade and improve their economic status.
The government spokesperson warned that environmental officials would regularly visit the markets to ensure compliance with proper sanitation practices. He also stated that offenders would be prosecuted according to the state’s environmental laws.
