The Ekiti State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing security through collaboration with neighboring states, according to Brig. Gen. Ebenezer Ogundana (Rtd.), the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters.
According to The PUNCH, Ogundana made this statement on Thursday during a meeting in Ado Ekiti, involving security advisers from Ekiti, Ondo, Kogi, Kwara, and Osun states.
The meeting, the first of its kind, aims to strengthen security cooperation among these states, which share common boundaries, in order to better protect lives and property.
Present at the gathering were Ogundana, the Senior Special Assistant on Security for Ondo State, Olugbenga Atiba, as well as security representatives from Kogi, Osun, and Kwara states.
The Director-General of Homeland Security for Ekiti, Dr. Adetunberu Oludotun, served as the meeting’s secretary.
Ogundana explained that the meeting was convened following directives from Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, to address growing cross-border security concerns.
He stressed the need for closer coordination in tackling crimes where offenders evade capture by crossing state borders.
“The inaugural meeting marks the start of serious collaboration among the states,” Ogundana stated.
“Future discussions will involve local governments in border regions to ensure even better coordination among security personnel.”
He further emphasized that the state government is fully committed to maintaining peace, not only within Ekiti but across its borders with neighboring states.
“A secure environment is crucial for attracting investments, particularly in agriculture. Without security, investors will be hesitant, and we are already seeing major agro investors showing interest in Ekiti,” Ogundana added.
Efforts to bolster security in farming communities, according to Ogundana, are part of the state’s strategy to encourage farmers to return to their activities, thereby improving food security.
He also expressed optimism that the state’s proactive measures would prevent a recurrence of recent food security issues.
“With improved relations between herders and farmers, and our ongoing security efforts, we are confident that the challenges we’ve faced won’t happen again,” Ogundana said.
He also reassured residents, urging them to continue their daily activities without fear of kidnappings, noting that the government is focused on ensuring their safety and creating a secure environment for investment.
