The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested a woman identified as Janty Emmanuel in Gombe State, on charges of abusing the naira notes.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the commission detailed that “Emmanuel was apprehended in Gombe, the state capital, on Monday, May 20, following intelligence reports indicating her involvement in spraying Naira notes at a social event.”
According to investigators from the EFCC’s Gombe Zonal Command, Emmanuel was seen in a video dancing at G-Connect, Tumfure, Gombe State, while spraying N1000 Naira notes.
Upon her arrest, she was shown the video and admitted to the act. The EFCC stated that she will face charges once the investigation is complete.
This arrest is part of the EFCC’s intensified campaign against the abuse of the naira, which has led to the conviction of two celebrities. On April 12, the Federal High Court in Lagos sentenced Idris Okuneye, known as Bobrisky, to six months in jail without the option of a fine. The judge, Abimbola Awogboro, noted that the sentence was intended to deter others from misusing the currency.
Previously, on February 2, 2023, the same court convicted actress Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin for spraying and stepping on new naira notes at a wedding in Lekki, Lagos State. Omoseyin was arrested on February 1, 2023, after a viral video showed her spraying the notes at the event on January 28, 2023. Judge Chukwujekwu Aneke sentenced her to six months imprisonment, with an option to pay a N300,000 fine.
