The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has highlighted the success of the recently launched e-border surveillance system in strengthening Nigeria’s border security.
According to The PUNCH, Tunji-Ojo noted that the initiative, unveiled on December 14, 2024, at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Technology Innovation Complex, has already achieved remarkable progress in combating irregular migration and enhancing border safety.
“The e-border surveillance system has been instrumental in addressing one of Nigeria’s most persistent challenges—illegal migration,” the minister stated.
He revealed that the system integrates advanced monitoring tools with real-time data, allowing for comprehensive surveillance across Nigeria’s 4,447 kilometres of land, air, and sea borders.
The minister also emphasized the integration of INTERPOL databases and other national security resources, which has significantly improved the ability to detect and respond to potential threats.
“Since its deployment, this technology has flagged and detained individuals with criminal histories or suspicious activities. It is a testament to how technology can bolster national security,” Tunji-Ojo added.
He further disclosed that the Nigeria Immigration Service has rolled out the e-border solutions across more than 80 crossing points nationwide, enabling seamless identification of persons of interest and effective interception.
