Former Netherlands international footballer, Quincy Promes, has been sentenced by a Dutch court to 18 months in jail for stabbing his cousin at a family party.
Due to his current residence in Russia, the 31-year-old forward for Spartak Moscow who pleaded not guilty was not present in court in Amsterdam for the sentencing.
The “disappointed” Promes would appeal, according to his attorney.
At the conclusion of a family birthday celebration in 2020, Promes stabbed his cousin in the leg in an argument about a stolen necklace, the court ruled.
Anyone found guilty of the crime would typically receive at least a year in prison, but Promes received a longer sentence because of his notoriety, it claimed.
“The court took into account that the suspect is a professional football player and well-known Dutchman, and therefore has an exemplary function,” the court said in a statement.
“The court also blames the suspect for not taking any responsibility for his act.”
Promes has been capped 50 times, scoring seven goals. He was a member of the national squad at the Euro 2020 championships, which were held in 2021 due to COVID-19, but he has not worn the orange shirt since.
He joined Ajax from Sevilla in a 15 million euro ($16.4 million) transfer in 2019, before returning to Spartak in 2021, where he was voted Russia’s footballer of the year in 2017.
