The Department of State Services has reassigned Peter Afunanya, the agency’s Director of Public Relations and Strategic Communications.
Afunanya announced his redeployment during a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, though he did not specify his next assignment. He described the move as part of routine adjustments within the service
Afunanya has served in the DSS media section for over a decade and took on the role of spokesperson around six years ago during a challenging period for the agency’s public image.
His appointment followed a gap in leadership after the compulsory retirement of Marilyn Ogar in 2015. Ogar had faced allegations of bribery and professional misconduct, charges she consistently denied.
Reflecting on his tenure, Afunanya expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the nation. “I am deeply honored to have served as the spokesman for this esteemed agency. I remain committed to the Service and will continue to serve my country with love, loyalty, honor, and glory, in whatever role I am assigned,” he stated.
The DSS recently appointed Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi as its new Director-General. Ajayi, who previously served as the DSS Director in Kogi State, officially took over last Thursday.
He has pledged to steer the service towards greater secrecy and effectiveness, focusing on addressing the complex economic, political, and security challenges facing Nigeria.
