A tragic tanker explosion in Ibadan, Oyo State, has claimed the life of a driver and left another individual injured.
The incident, involving a Premium Motor Spirit, otherwise known as petrol tanker, occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, January 22, 2025.
According to the General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, Yemi Akinyinka, the tanker lost control, collided with two other trucks, and overturned into a nearby pit before bursting into flames.
“The incident happened around Fijabi House, Agbowo, Ojoo, Iwo Road Expressway,” Akinyinka revealed in a statement. “The agency received a distress call about the fire incident at exactly 2:45 a.m. through a telephone call.”
Fire service personnel promptly responded to the call, containing the fire to prevent it from spreading to residential areas.
Upon their arrival, they encountered three trucks situated within 20 meters of one another, two of which were involved in the blaze.
“The driver was burnt to death while the motor boy was rescued alive and taken to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, for treatment,” Akinyinka said.
He further explained that the tanker was completely destroyed, but the quick intervention of the fire service saved the other two trucks from extensive damage.
Akinyinka also noted the presence of the agency’s Director of Operations, Ismail Adeleke, along with his team, the police, and other security agencies who worked together to maintain order at the scene.
