A taxi driver has been apprehended on suspicion of involvement in a kidnapping case after a phone belonging to an abducted woman was found in the possession of his wife.
The incident came to light when the spokesperson for the Delta State Police Command, SP Bright Edafe, shared details on his X handle.
Edafe explained that the woman had been kidnapped and later released after paying a ransom.
“Her phone was taken by the kidnappers but was later recovered from the wife of the taxi driver. When questioned, the wife claimed that her husband had bought the phone for her. The husband, in turn, stated that a passenger had left the phone in his car,” the police spokespsrson explained.
Edafe expressed concern, saying, “Now how can he prove that truly the phone was left in his car, how can he prove that he was not part of the kidnappers???? See why we all should be careful with phones that are not ours?”
This incident has ignited discussions across social media platforms, with many users sharing their perspectives on the matter.
One user, @PatriotSetinel, suggested that reporting the situation to the authorities could have prevented the driver’s arres. “If he had reported at the nearest police station, he would be free,” he wrote.
Another user, @Emekamych, raised doubts about the driver’s story, questioning his actions, adding, “If truly someone left the phone, then the questions is why did he hurriedly lied to the wife that he bought it for her? Why didn’t he report to the police or wait to receive call from the owner in order to return it? Many many questions.”
Meanwhile, @IamAkpeko emphasized the importance of forensic analysis in the investigation, stressing, “Forensic analysis of the phone could potentially reveal evidence, such as call logs or messages, that could help determine the phone’s origin. Hiring a skilled criminal defense attorney can help the taxi driver navigate the legal process and protect his rights.”
On a different note, @Osasdave4702 shared a personal rule regarding purchasing used electronics, “Two things I can never buy that is not new. A Laptop 💻 and a Phone 📱. E must be new one. No vex.”
Finally, @Brymm3 called for a balanced approach in the investigation, advising the police to focus on the kidnappers while considering the potential role of the taxi driver, noting, “Focus all your investigations and time in getting those kidnappers. Don’t waste too much time on the taxi driver.. But the taxi driver can really help in the investigation.”
Adding to the discussion, @dilibeneng mentioned their preference for new devices, saying, “I don’t know the last time I bought second hand phones for myself or my wife’s.
