Dangote Cement Plc, through its Obajana Plant in Kogi State, recently unveiled several community-focused initiatives during its 2024 Sustainability Week, aiming to foster community engagement and boost awareness about sustainability practices.
In an official statement, Dangote Cement shared that its mission for 2024 Sustainability Week was to involve and uplift local communities, emphasizing the company’s commitment to supporting its host communities.
Head of the Sustainability Department, highlighted the week’s significance, Eseosa Ighile, stating, “We are using the Sustainability Week to engage with and support local communities through donations and outreach.”
The company’s initiative also aimed to deepen connections with local communities while emphasizing sustainability’s role in improving quality of life.
Throughout the week, Obajana’s Sustainability Champions organized a series of outreach activities, including a visit to the Ministry of Mercy Orphanage in Lokoja, where they donated food supplies and essentials.
The team spent time interacting with the orphanage’s children and staff, engaging them in games and recreational activities, which brought joy and lightheartedness to the children’s daily lives.
This thoughtful gesture helped to reinforce Dangote Cement’s commitment to the welfare of its surrounding communities.
The orphanage’s management expressed heartfelt appreciation for the visit, underscoring the value it brought to the children and residents.
The event also boosted the morale of Dangote Cement employees who took part, as they found fulfillment in giving back and actively contributing to the well-being of others.
Plant Director at Dangote Cement Plc, Azad Nawabuddin, spoke to the impact of the 2024 Sustainability Week, aligning it with the year’s theme, “Sustainable Development Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities,” Nawabuddin added, “This year’s celebration was packed with activities involving employee and stakeholder engagement, as well as charity outreach programmes,” noting the essential role each effort played in fostering a shared sense of purpose within the company and its stakeholders.
In addition to the charitable outreach, Dangote Cement used the Sustainability Week as an educational platform for young people.
Workshops and sessions were organized to address the importance of climate change action and health awareness, equipping youth with knowledge and inspiring them to make environmentally conscious choices for a more sustainable future.
