The Ogun 1 Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has issued a warning to Nigerians about the dangers of using second-hand tyres, commonly referred to as ‘tokunbo tyres,’ to help reduce frequent road accidents.
The Command’s Comptroller, Mr. James Ojo, shared this advice with journalists in Ota, Ogun, on Monday.
He highlighted that these tyres are a significant factor contributing to road crashes across the state and the country.
Ojo encouraged people to invest in new tyres rather than used ones, emphasizing their durability and safety on the roads.
He acknowledged the current economic challenges but stressed the importance of making safe choices to prevent unnecessary fatalities.
“These pneumatic tyres, popularly known as Tokunbo tyres, are deemed unsuitable for our highways because a significant number of them have exceeded their recommended lifespan from their manufacturing dates. In addition, any usage beyond this duration can pose a significant risk to motorists and put their lives in jeopardy,” Ojo said.
He reaffirmed the Customs Service’s dedication to enhancing road safety, supporting the local economy, and maintaining the integrity of the nation’s borders.
