Cuban reggaeton star, José Manuel Carbajal Zadivar, professionally known as El Taiger, passed away Thursday afternoon, one week after being discovered with a gunshot wound to the head in Miami, United States.
A statement shared on his official Instagram account expressed the deep sense of loss felt by his family, friends, and fans. “During this incredibly difficult time, family, friends, and followers came together in prayer, hope, and support, seeking a miracle. To all who offered their prayers, we thank you. Sadly, this afternoon, El Taiger was pronounced dead and has now been reunited with his beloved mother in heaven.”
The 37-year-old artist had been in critical condition after police responded to reports of a shooting early on a Thursday morning.
Officers arrived shortly after 7 a.m. to find El Taiger in a black Mercedes SUV, parked near NW 17th Street and 10th Avenue, with a gunshot wound to the head.
He was swiftly transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, where he was placed on life support in hopes of recovery.
His manager, Macel Reinosa, revealed that a person of interest was under investigation—someone who knew the artist personally and had allegedly placed the 9-1-1 call.
No further information about the suspect has been released, but authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
El Taiger’s family took the opportunity to thank the medical team at Jackson Memorial for their dedication, stating, “His family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the medical team at Jackson Memorial Hospital for their tireless efforts, as well as to the millions who offered prayers and tributes during his hospitalization. These last few days have been incredibly difficult for those who loved him, and the support received from around the world has meant a lot.”
As the world mourns his passing, fans are being urged to honor his legacy through the joy he brought to others through his music, “El Taiger was the feeling of the people, and now we must keep that feeling alive through their music and their legacy,” the Instagram post continued.
His music, which was deeply rooted in reggaeton’s infectious blend of Caribbean and urban rhythms, touched countless lives, both in Cuba and beyond.
