Angel Correa rescued a point for Atletico Madrid with a dramatic stoppage-time equalizer, securing a 1-1 draw against Real Madrid in a tense and action-packed Madrid derby.
Real Madrid appeared on course for a hard-fought away victory in La Liga, thanks to Eder Militao’s impressive second-half goal.
The game, however, took a wild turn when Correa, coming off the bench, battled his way into the box and fired home the late equalizer, sending the Metropolitano Stadium into raptures.
The match had been interrupted earlier due to crowd disturbances, with the referee forced to halt play and lead both sets of players off the pitch.
A delay of around 20 minutes followed, as fans threw objects such as lighters onto the field, causing tensions to rise in the stands.
Eventually, the situation was brought under control, and the game resumed.
Real Madrid had the first real chance of the match through Julian Alvarez, who burst down the left wing only to see his shot saved by Thibaut Courtois.
Madrid struggled to break down Atletico’s defense in the first half, relying on long-range efforts.
Federico Valverde tested Jan Oblak with a powerful strike, while his later free-kick also threatened the Atletico goal. Jude Bellingham had a chance as well, forcing another solid stop from Oblak.
In the second half, Madrid finally found the breakthrough. Luka Modric’s clever pass released Vinicius Jr down the left, who delivered a perfectly weighted cross for Militao.
The Brazilian defender took the ball down expertly and slotted it past Oblak, finishing with the composure of a forward.
However, the celebrations were soon dampened when the home supporters began throwing items onto the pitch, leading to the significant stoppage.
Diego Simeone was seen urging the crowd to settle down, while Atletico players pleaded with their fans to cease the disruption.
After the delay, Atletico pressed relentlessly for an equalizer, and their persistence paid off in the dying moments. Correa pounced on a loose ball in the Real penalty area and bundled it over the line, much to the delight of the home crowd.
The drama didn’t end there, as Atletico’s Marcos Llorente was shown a red card for a reckless challenge in the closing minutes.
Despite being down to ten men, Atletico held on and celebrated the final whistle with jubilation, while Real Madrid were left ruing the lost opportunity to claim all three points.
