A banner displayed at the entrance of the Lekki Central Mosque in Lagos State has ignited a heated discussion on social media.
The banner, which gained widespread attention on Wednesday, reads: “Jesus Christ is not God. He is a Prophet and Messenger of God!”
The statement has drawn sharp criticism from many, who described it as disrespectful and capable of stirring religious tensions. On social media, several users expressed their disapproval, labeling the message as offensive to Christians.
Nigerian actress Wumi Tuase joined the conversation, sharing her thoughts on X (formerly Twitter): “I don’t like to get into religious conversations, but I found it very weird that Lekki Central Mosque has this in front of their gate.”
However, others defended the banner, arguing that it aligns with Islamic teachings and that similar sentiments have been expressed by Christian leaders in the past.
A user identified as @Dannymasterp commented: “Jesus is not God; the evidence is clear. Churches celebrate his personality more than his teachings, calling him God because of miracles, which were meant to show he was sent by God.”
Another user, @shinoremy, cautioned against the potential implications of such statements: “The issue with the banner isn’t whether it is true or not. However, it counters a religious doctrine, and coming from a religion like Islam, it could incite conflicts. We need to respect ourselves and avoid such actions.”
An influencer, @GuyMr0, wrote: “That’s the hard truth. Jesus Christ is not God. He’s a Messenger of God. If Jesus Christ is God, then who was God before Jesus Christ was born?”
Others supported the mosque’s position, with @Haceboiy stating: “What’s wrong with that? Is Jesus God? No. The mosque is reminding people who are misled by pastors and church doctrines to understand that Jesus was a man who came from Jerusalem in the Middle East.”
