Nigerian comedian, Adebamiro Adeyanju, popularly known as Mr Hyenena, recently opened up about his past working relationship with Florence Otedola, better known as DJ Cuppy, during an interview with Echo Room.
The comedian revealed that he had worked as a hypeman for DJ Cuppy for about two years before being let go, a development that took the show’s presenter by surprise.
Mr Hyenena recounted how he first crossed paths with DJ Cuppy, explaining that they both attended the same church, where he had multiple encounters with the Otedola family.
One day, he mustered the courage to approach her and pitch himself as her hypeman, offering to do the job for free.
To his delight, DJ Cuppy accepted his proposal and even insisted on paying him for his services.
This marked the beginning of their professional relationship, which lasted for two years.
During this period, Hyenena shared that DJ Cuppy, who had recently been baptized, was deeply focused on her career as a disc jockey.
However, as time went on, she seemed to grow distant, no longer involving him in her activities as much as before.
Despite this, Hyenena expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to work with the Otedola family, whom he described as pleasant and kind-hearted.
Reflecting on his time working with DJ Cuppy, Mr Hyenena fondly recalled an incident in a club where Femi Otedola, Cuppy’s father, showed him an unexpected gesture of trust.
Otedola, noticing Hyenena’s presence around his daughter, rested his shoulder on the comedian, a moment that Hyenena cherished deeply. “You should know what it means to have such an amazing person resting on you,” he said.
When it came to the end of his time with DJ Cuppy, Hyenena noted that while he couldn’t point to a specific moment when he was sacked, he didn’t hold any grudges.
“I think DJ Cuppy is an emotional person. I felt she didn’t know how to tell me she wasn’t doing it again,” he said.
He believed that some of her managers didn’t like him, but he was thankful for the chance to work with such a prominent figure in the entertainment industry.
Hyenen also admitted that he wasn’t the best at his job back then, but he was trying to set himself apart from other hypemen by not sounding like a “regular hypeman.”
He speculated that DJ Cuppy might have felt she had taken him as far as she could and decided not to bring him to the next level of her journey.
The comedian recounted the final moments of his working relationship with DJ Cuppy, mentioning that he had once asked a friend to stand in for him at an event. “Maybe they liked his ‘stand-in…'” he laughed, acknowledging that this might have marked the end of his time with her.
Despite the outcome, Mr Hyenena holds no ill will toward DJ Cuppy, still considering her his best friend.
“She has so many managers that didn’t like me. I wasn’t the best person at job then but God placed beside the DJ in Africa in the person on DJ Cuppy. I was really trying I ding want to sound like a regular ‘hype man’.”
“Probably she felt had carried me over to level two and she didn’t want to take me e to another level. She is my best friend I can’t hold anything against her. She had an event that and I told my friend I have and event with DJ Cuppy can you stand in for me?”
“Maybe they like his ‘stand in…’ laughs! . That was all, that was the end of my working with her ”
