Citizens have been urged by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (ret.d) to accept money from politicians, but vote for their preferred candidates.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Buhari made this statement on Saturday after casting his vote at polling unit 003, Sarkin Yara A in Daura, Katsina state, as the governorship and house of assembly elections were held throughout the country.
Buhari acknowledged that his administration had been discouraging vote-buying and the monetization of politics in the country, and he urged politicians who engaged in these practices to discontinue them.
He stated that if politicians continued to offer money, citizens should accept it but vote for their preferred candidates.
He said: “If they (politicians) still give you money, collect, but vote for your preferred candidates.”
Buhari commended the voters for their trust in the All Progressive Congress during the presidential and national assembly elections that took place on February 25.
Although the president openly revealed his ballot with his thumbprint when he voted for Bola Tinubu, the candidate of the ruling party during the presidential election, he reportedly declined to openly display his ballot paper after voting for his candidates in the governorship and house of assembly elections.
