The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has strongly condemned the killing of 16 travelers in Uromi, Edo State, pledging that those responsible will face justice.
The victims, identified as hunters, were reportedly returning from Rivers State to celebrate Eid-el-Fitr with their families when they were attacked by a mob last Thursday.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with northern groups, state governments, and lawmakers condemning the killings.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the Director of Defence Information, Brig. Gen. Tukur Gusau, General Musa expressed regret over the tragedy, emphasizing that it could have been avoided if the authorities had been informed beforehand.
“The incident, which occurred on 28 March 2025, could have been avoided if the appropriate authorities were notified and involved in ascertaining the identity of the victims,” Musa stated.
He extended condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the families of those who lost their lives, urging Nigerians to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.
“The CDS also urged Nigerians not to take laws into their hands but always revert to constituted authorities in matters that affect security,” the statement read. “The Nigeria Police, military, and other security agencies are well trained to handle such matters.”
General Musa assured the public that security forces would work together to ensure justice. “The Armed Forces of Nigeria will collaborate with the police and other relevant security agencies to bring the perpetrators of this heinous act to justice,” he added.
Additionally, he cautioned vigilante groups and hunters to register with relevant agencies to regulate firearm possession. “All local hunters and vigilante groups should register with the police, DSS, AFN, or any other agency mandated by law to regulate firearm possession,” he warned.
Musa called for calm and urged citizens to support security agencies in maintaining law and order. “We seek the support of all Nigerians to enable the Armed Forces and other security agencies to perform their constitutional duties with diligence,” he stated.
