Wolfsburg edged past Werder Bremen with a hard-fought 2-1 victory at the Weserstadion, thanks to a brace from Patrick Wimmer and an outstanding goalkeeping display by Marius Müller.
Both teams came into the fixture eager to climb the Bundesliga standings. However, Bremen had struggled in recent weeks, winning only once in their previous eight league matches in 2025 and conceding a league-high 22 goals during that period.
Wolfsburg, in contrast, had been in solid form, suffering just one defeat in their last eight games.
History was also on their side, as they had secured more Bundesliga wins at the Weserstadion (12) than at any other away ground.
The match started at a frantic pace, with Bremen initially looking sharp. Yet, Wolfsburg struck first in the 6th minute when Patrick Wimmer found the net from close range after a well-delivered corner from Andreas Skov Olsen.
His backheel finish, which came somewhat against the run of play, set the tone for an eventful night for the Austrian forward.
Despite falling behind early, Bremen remained composed and generated several clear-cut chances before the break. André Silva was particularly unlucky, first drawing a save from Müller in the 19th minute before striking the post moments later.
Müller continued to be a wall in goal, making crucial saves to deny Jens Stage, Mitchell Weiser, and Miloš Veljković, ensuring Wolfsburg retained their lead at the interval.
Any hopes of a Bremen resurgence in the second half were quickly dashed. Just three minutes after the restart, Wimmer produced a moment of brilliance, unleashing a sensational 30-yard strike that soared past Michael Zetterer into the top corner.
His stunning goal silenced the home crowd and put Wolfsburg firmly in control with a 2-0 advantage.
The two-goal deficit seemed to drain Bremen’s momentum, and while they pushed forward, Wolfsburg’s disciplined game management kept them at bay.
Müller continued his inspired performance, frustrating Bremen’s attack with key saves. As full-time approached, Bremen managed to pull one back in the 90th minute through Weiser, who slotted home from inside the box.
However, the goal came too late to alter the outcome, and Wolfsburg held firm to secure all three points.
Wimmer’s clinical finishing proved decisive, with his two goals coming from just three shots on target. Beyond his scoring exploits, he was a constant attacking threat, creating chances for his teammates while also putting in a shift defensively.
His outstanding display perfectly encapsulated Wolfsburg’s efficiency and composure throughout the match.
