A late goal from Benedict Hollerbach, capitalizing on an error by goalkeeper Jonas Urbig, ensured Union Berlin earned a 1-1 draw at home against Bayern Munich on Saturday.
Despite the setback, Bayern still managed to extend their lead at the top of the Bundesliga table to nine points.
The Bavarians, chasing their 34th league title, now sit on 62 points, while second-placed Bayer Leverkusen, who have a game in hand, will look to close the gap when they visit VfB Stuttgart on Sunday.
Under Vincent Kompany, Bayern dominated possession early, pinning Union in their own half. However, the home side maintained a disciplined defensive shape, restricting Bayern largely to attempts from distance.
Serge Gnabry came closest to breaking the deadlock for Bayern just before halftime, latching onto a Michael Olise through ball, but his effort from a tight angle was kept out by Frederik Ronnow.
After the break, Bayern continued to push forward, with Jamal Musiala and Harry Kane both failing to capitalize on promising opportunities.
The breakthrough finally came in the 75th minute when substitute Leroy Sané rifled in Olise’s cutback.
Yet, Bayern’s advantage was short-lived. Eight minutes later, Union, who had absorbed pressure for much of the game, capitalized on a moment of indecision from Urbig.
Josip Juranovic delivered a cross into the box, and Urbig’s weak punch fell kindly for Hollerbach—a former Bayern academy player—who nodded in the equalizer.
The result marks Bayern’s second consecutive Bundesliga match without a win following their surprising 3-2 home defeat to VfL Bochum last week.
Meanwhile, Union Berlin, still without a win in 12 league encounters against Bayern, climbed one spot to 13th in the standings.
Union played the match without coach Steffen Baumgart, who watched from the stands while serving a touchline suspension.
