Leon Goretzka struck in each half to guide Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich to a 3-2 win over VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday, extending their lead at the top of the table to seven points over reigning champions Bayer Leverkusen.
The Bavarians came close early on, with Leroy Sane rattling the crossbar just three minutes into the match.
Goretzka then broke the deadlock in the 20th minute, firing a precise 22-meter shot that ricocheted off the post and into the net.
Wolfsburg responded swiftly, equalizing just four minutes later when Mohamed Amoura converted their first opportunity.
Bayern, however, reclaimed the lead in the 39th minute when Michael Olise unleashed a thunderous long-range strike.
In first-half stoppage time, Joshua Kimmich appeared to have added to Bayern’s tally, slotting home a Kingsley Coman cross, but the goal was ruled out for handball.
After the interval, Bayern maintained their attacking momentum. Goretzka doubled his tally in the 61st minute with a header that clipped the post before finding the back of the net, giving the hosts a 3-1 cushion.
Despite dominating chances, Bayern failed to extend their lead. Coman missed a golden opportunity, capitalizing on a Wolfsburg defensive error but firing wide with only the goalkeeper to beat.
Wolfsburg made things nervy in the closing moments as Algerian international Amoura bagged his second goal in the 88th minute following a dazzling solo run by substitute Tiago Tomas.
The Bavarians held firm in the dying minutes to secure their fourth consecutive league victory, moving to 45 points.
They now sit seven points clear of Leverkusen, who were set to face Borussia Moenchengladbach later in the day. Wolfsburg remain seventh with 27 points.
Bayern next travel to Feyenoord on Wednesday for their Champions League clash.
