Serhou Guirassy continued his fine form on Saturday, finding the net once more as Borussia Dortmund secured consecutive Bundesliga victories for the first time this season with a 2-0 triumph over St. Pauli.
Despite the win, Niko Kovač’s side delivered an underwhelming performance, struggling to build on their emphatic 6-0 demolition of Union Berlin the previous weekend.
Dortmund lacked attacking edge in the first half, while St. Pauli, goalless in their last three matches, created the better chances.
Guirassy broke the deadlock in the 50th minute, notching his 14th goal of the campaign against the run of play. His initial shot was blocked by St. Pauli defender David Nemeth, but he reacted quickly to tuck the rebound home from close range.
The goal stemmed from a defensive lapse as the hosts failed to clear Yan Couto’s cross, allowing Karim Adeyemi to retrieve possession and set up Guirassy.
Adeyemi then doubled Dortmund’s lead in the 58th minute, capitalizing on a counterattack following a St. Pauli free kick. Marcel Sabitzer’s clearance sparked the move, giving Adeyemi the space to finish clinically.
With the win, Dortmund remained in 10th place but gained ground in the Champions League race, helped by Mainz’s 2-1 comeback victory against Leipzig.
Elsewhere, it was a day dominated by away teams in the Bundesliga. Wolfsburg edged Werder Bremen 2-1, condemning the hosts to a fifth straight defeat in all competitions.
Hoffenheim secured a narrow 1-0 win at Bochum, while Borussia Mönchengladbach eased past Heidenheim with a 3-0 victory.
Later in the day, defending champions Bayer Leverkusen took on third-placed Eintracht Frankfurt in a key fixture.
