A former inspector general of police, Solomon Arase, was sworn in by President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday to serve as the new chairman of the Police Service Commission.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Arase was sworn in two months before the Federal Executive Council meeting and before the FEC meeting itself.
As per sections 153 (1) and 154 (1) of the new constitution, Buhari had sent Arase’s name to the Senate for confirmation.
Arase, 65, the 18th indigenous Inspector-General of Police, retired in 2016. (from April 2015 to June 2016).
He held a number of positions during his time in service, including that of the head of the Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Bureau, the premier intelligence-gathering unit of the Nigerian police.
The five board members of the Code of Conduct Bureau were also sworn in by the president.
Murtala Kankia from Katsina State (North-West), Zephaniah Bulus from Nasarawa State (North Central), and Farouk Umar from Yobe were among the members who were impacted (North East).
Others are Professor Juwaria Badamasi from Kogi State and Taofik Abdulsalam from Ondo (Southwest) (North Central).
In addition, the Council members observed a moment of silence in memory of the deceased retired Lt.-Gen. Oladipo Diya.
Under the Abacha dictatorship, Diya held the positions of Vice Chairman of the Interim Governing Council and Chief of General Staff.
