The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency has confirmed that the elder brother of a woman named Abigail Chris, who recently sought help on the microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter) regarding the series of assaults she suffered from him, has been arrested.
Abigail’s case was brought to the attention of the agency by a user named @Ayomiepat_ on Monday, who shared posts and pictures of her physical and mental state, calling on authorities to intervene.
According to sources, Abigail has been a victim of physical assault at the hands of her brother since 2014.
The most recent incident occurred on December 21, 2023, after which she decided to seek help and inform the relevant authorities.
Pictures circulating online show Abigail with a cut in her upper left eye and bruises on other parts of her body as a result of the beating.
In a note written by Abigail on December 21, she expressed her desire to distance herself from her family and hoped for a better year ahead, free from their abuses.
The X user also alleged that Abigail’s family had been covering up her brother’s actions since the abuse started.
In a voice recording, Abigail can be heard speaking to a male voice believed to be that of her elder brother, recounting the past incidents of abuse and questioning when it will end.
The male voice can be heard threatening her not to report to the authorities or reveal her experiences.
Another user, @Orioninc_ng, confirmed the incident and stated that Abigail had also been beaten by the landlord of their house in 2023.
The spokesperson for the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, Joke Ladenegan-Oginni, confirmed that the agency received a report of the case and the perpetrator had been arrested.
She said, “The agency confirms that the case was received through our social media handle; a case of physical abuse towards one Ms Abigail perpetrated by her elder brother.
