Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum inaugurated the state’s 2024 tree-planting campaign on Tuesday, setting a record as Nigeria’s largest tree-planting exercise with 10 million seedlings.
According to The PUNCH, the initiative, aimed at mitigating desertification, commenced in Kawuri village, Konduga Local Government Area.
Governor Zulum emphasized the state’s commitment to environmental protection, highlighting various efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
These include the acquisition of electric vehicles and gas cylinders for community distribution. Additionally, a new agency for the Great Green Wall has been established to tackle desertification and maintain the ecosystem.
Addressing the issue of deforestation, Zulum directed the Secretary to the State Government to collaborate with the State House of Assembly in strengthening environmental laws.
The Commissioner for Environment, Engineer Emet Kiose, encouraged NGOs, clubs, associations, and the public to obtain seedlings from the ministry for planting.
The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the NAGGW, Saleh Abubakar, represented by the agency’s Director of Planning and Policy Coordination, Hajiya Habiba Usman, stated this at Kawuri in Konduga Local Government Area of the state on Tuesday.
“The agency is elated and happy to note that Born is the first state in the country to domesticate the GGW Act by establishing the state agency and appointing the pioneer Director General,” Abubakar acknowledged.
He added, “Thus, the NAGGW is glad to be part of the tree-planting campaign, as this not only complements the agency’s interventions, but also shows the Borno State Government’s commitment to addressing environmental challenges associated with land degradation and climate change.”
