A bomb explosion in Thailand has killed three people, injuring four others on Tuesday.
According to AFP, the police stated that the bomb exploded on a roadside in Thailand’s troubled deep south, after seven state railway employees were on their way to fix a section of track in Songkhla Province, near the Malaysian border, which had been damaged in another bomb attack on Saturday.
The bomb was concealed roughly two hundred meters away from the location of the earlier explosion.
“We believe the bomb had been there since Saturday,” said police colonel Chartchai Chanasit, adding that no other explosive devices had been found.
Since 2004, rebels in the region of Thailand’s south that is predominantly Muslim have been fighting for greater autonomy from the state, which has led to the deaths of over 7,000 people. The conflict has been kept at a low level.
The region, which is under heavy surveillance by Thai security forces, maintains a cultural identity distinct from that of Buddhist-dominated Thailand, which has controlled the area for more than a century.
The explosions come after a car bomb went off outside of police accommodations a month ago, causing one person to lose their life and more than two dozen others to sustain injuries.
