A Euro 2024 qualifier match between Belgium and Sweden was abruptly halted at half-time on Monday following a suspected “terrorist attack” in Brussels, resulting in the tragic death of two Swedish nationals, as confirmed by officials.
Journalists at the Roi Baudouin stadium in Brussels reported that fans were being held in the venue, and the UEFA website stated that the game had been stopped with a 1-1 score.
The Swedish football association conveyed that Belgian police had instructed supporters to remain in the arena for security purposes.
In an official statement, UEFA announced, “Following a suspected terrorist attack in Brussels this evening, it has been decided after consultation with the two teams and the local police authorities that the UEFA EURO 2024 qualifying match between Belgium and Sweden is abandoned.”
The Belgian national team used its social media channels to inform the public: “Due to the incidents in Brussels earlier tonight, play is suspended. Our thoughts are with all those affected.”
Earlier in the day, a shooting incident occurred in Brussels, resulting in the tragic deaths of two individuals. Prosecutors revealed that the suspected gunman was at large.
Belgian Prime Minister Alexander de Croo confirmed that the victims were Swedish nationals and extended his condolences to Sweden’s leader. He also expressed a commitment to stand together against “terrorism.”
