Bayern Munich bounced back with a decisive 5-0 victory over VfL Bochum on Sunday, reinforcing their position at the top of the Bundesliga standings.
This dominant performance was a much-needed response after their midweek 4-1 defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League, a second European loss in three games, which left coach Vincent Kompany facing criticism.
The Bavarians were in full control against Bochum, swiftly putting any notion of an upset to rest.
From the outset, Bayern displayed their attacking prowess, creating multiple chances and consistently pressuring the hosts.
The opening goal came in the 16th minute, courtesy of a superbly placed free kick by Michael Olise, who curled it into the top corner, leaving the Bochum goalkeeper with no chance.
Bayern doubled their advantage ten minutes later, with Jamal Musiala scoring his fourth goal of the season and continuing his impressive run of form.
Bochum, struggling at the bottom of the Bundesliga with just one point from eight matches, were unable to keep up with Bayern’s tempo.
The visitors resumed their offensive approach in the second half, with Musiala turning playmaker to set up Harry Kane for Bayern’s third in the 58th minute.
Kane’s ninth goal of the season ties him at the top of the league’s scoring chart with Eintracht Frankfurt’s Omar Marmoush.
Vincent Kompany, under fire following European losses to Aston Villa and Barcelona, now finds some reprieve with this league victory. His squad has racked up 29 goals in his first eight Bundesliga games—setting a new league record for a coach’s debut run in the competition.
The goal-scoring spree continued, with substitutes Leroy Sane and Kingsley Coman each finding the net from long-range efforts in the 65th and 71st minutes, respectively.
Bayern’s offensive display pushed them to 20 points, keeping them at the top of the Bundesliga, edging out RB Leipzig on goal difference, while defending champions Bayer Leverkusen sit third with 15 points.
Bochum remain rooted at the bottom, facing a tough road ahead to escape relegation concerns.
