Trial for Brazilian footballer Dani Alves, who is accused of sexually assaulting a woman in a Barcelona nightclub, is scheduled for October or November 2023, where he faces up to 12 years in prison if convicted.
Since January 23, 2023, the 40-year-old has been in custody after a 23-year-old lady accused him of sexually abusing her in a lavatory at the prestigious Sutton Club.
The judges at the Barcelona high court recently turned down the latest application by the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain footballer to be released on remand.
There are concerns, according to Marca, that if Alves were released, he may flee the country and go back to his home country of Brazil, which doesn’t extradite its citizens.
A trial date has reportedly been set for Alves’ case, according to a recent El Periodico story, however the precise timing has not yet been confirmed.
Due to the Law on the Guarantee of Sexual Freedom, which went into force in October, Alves could be sentenced to six to twelve years in prison if found guilty.
Alves said he had never met his accuser in a TV appearance before his arrest.
After being imprisoned, he then changed his story, claiming there had been an agreement and no attack.
