Armed bandits launched a deadly attack on Maibakko village in the Sabuwa Local Government Area of Katsina State, killing two people and abducting several others in the early hours of Thursday.
According to The PUNCH, Katsina State Police Command, however, reported that officers engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle, thwarting the abduction attempt and successfully rescuing 13 victims.
Confirming the incident in a statement late Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer , DSP Abubakar Sadiq, said the attack occurred around 1:43 a.m. when the gunmen stormed the village, firing sporadically.
“On February 6, 2025, at about 0143 hrs, our operatives at Sabuwa Divisional Police Headquarters received a distress call about an attack by suspected bandits armed with AK-47 rifles in Maibakko village,” Sadiq stated.
He explained that security operatives swiftly responded, engaging the bandits in a gunfight that led to the rescue of 13 captives. Unfortunately, two villagers lost their lives, and another person sustained injuries.
“The rescued victims, though shaken, were unharmed and have since been reunited with their families. Efforts are ongoing to locate and safely rescue the remaining abducted persons while tracking down the assailants,” he added.
Sadiq reassured residents that the police command remains committed to ensuring public safety, vowing that security forces will intensify operations to curb criminal activities in the state.
