In a tight and hard-fought friendly match on Sunday at the World Cup Stadium in Seoul, defending European champions Manchester City fell to Atletico Madrid 2-1.
Both clubs selected starting lineups that were nearly complete, with the exception of Kevin De Bruyne, who was sidelined due to an injury sustained during the Champions League final.
In the 66th minute, Memphis Depay successfully converted a goal for Atletico, after receiving a ball from Angel Correa at the outside of the penalty area. This resulted in a successful shot past Stefan Ortega, who had taken over the custodian position from Ederson after halftime.
Yannick Carrasco added a second from the edge of the penalty area in the 74th minute.
On Wednesday, City defeated Bayern Munich in Japan, but did not score until Ruben Dias equalised.
Erling Haaland, a prolific goal scorer, played 55 minutes but failed to find the back of the net.
Diego Simeone, manager of Atletico Madrid, expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance.
“We played with the tranquillity that characterises us,” he said.
