The Academic Staff Union of Universities has issued a nationwide strike threat, citing the Federal Government’s failure to appoint Governing Councils for Federal Universities and its perceived disregard for academic matters.
According to The PUNCH, during a press briefing at the University of Abuja, ASUU criticized the government’s 35% salary increment for professors and 25% increment for other academics, viewing it as a potentially reversible wage award.
ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osadeke, expressed disappointment with the Tinubu-led government’s inaction despite ample time given to address these issues.
The union also condemned the dissolution of Governing Councils by the Federal Government, deeming it illegal and contrary to university governance principles.
The National Universities Commission had previously announced the dissolution of these councils based on a directive from President Bola Tinubu to dissolve boards of all government agencies and parastatals.
