The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, has stated that drug hawkers will be prosecuted.
The Director General,NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, while speaking in Lagos on Wednesday stated that drug hawkers are ‘death agents’, as they expose drugs to various weather conditions which affects the quality of drugs with them.
She claims that drug dealers supply and distribute drugs for criminal organisations like as gangs, rebels, kidnappers, and armed robbers.
“Drug hawkers constitute a serious threat to our national security,” said Adeyeye, who was represented by Dr. Leonard Omokpariola, Director, Chemical and Research, NAFDAC. Because drugs are both very dangerous and potentially life-saving, they should not be marketed in the same places as other goods.
“I wish to warn you that any drug hawker arrested by NAFDAC will be prosecuted, and will face a jail term, and our enforcement officers are currently carrying out synchronised nation-wide operations. No offender will be spared from facing the full wrath of the law.
“In this regard, we solicit the cooperation and support of all other law enforcement agencies, Nigerian journalists and well-meaning Nigerians in ridding the country of this harmful and shameful practice.”
She further criticised carbide-assisted fruit ripening as an additional public challenge the agency was addressing.
