The Commissioner of Police for Akwa Ibom State, Waheed Ayilara, has died.
According to the Nation, Ayilara passed away in the early hours of Thursday at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital in Ikeja.
Sources close to the family revealed that Ayilara had undergone prostate cancer surgery on Wednesday but died hours after the procedure.
In a statement shared with the media, a family representative expressed their sorrow, saying, “We are very sad to inform you that our friend, brother, and family member, the Commissioner of Police for Akwa Ibom State, Waheed Ayilara, has passed away.”
A senior police officer in Akwa Ibom State, who preferred to remain anonymous due to a lack of authorisation to speak on the matter, confirmed the news of Ayilara’s death.
Ayilara’s police career saw a notable progression when, in November 2023, he was appointed acting Commissioner of Police in Lagos while serving as a Deputy Commissioner of Police.
Before his appointment in Akwa Ibom, Ayilara was the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department.
He took over the Akwa Ibom State Command in February 2024 following a deployment by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
