The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has affirmed that the continued stay of Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun in office is lawful and in line with the amended Police Act.
Egbetokun, who was appointed as IGP on October 31, 2023, was originally expected to retire upon reaching the mandatory age of 60 on September 4, 2024.
However, the amended Police Act now permits the IGP to complete the full four-year tenure granted under Section 7(6) of the law, irrespective of age.
“By virtue of the amendment to the Police Act in 2024, the Inspector General of Police is entitled to a four-year term from the date of appointment, which in this case extends to October 31, 2027,” Fagbemi stated.
He emphasized that Egbetokun’s tenure extension aligns with legal provisions and urged the public to take note of the clarification.
“This advisory is necessary to provide guidance and dispel any misconceptions regarding the tenure of the Inspector General of Police,” the AGF added.
The clarification comes amid public debates over Egbetokun’s continued stay in office, with concerns raised about retirement regulations and tenure stability within the Nigeria Police Force.
