An earthquake in Afghanistan and Pakistan has reportedly killed 12 people with hundreds of people injured.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake which occured on Tuesday was said to be a magnitude 6.5 quake.
Also according to AFP, a Kabul resident Khatera said, “It was a terrifying tremor. I had never felt such a tremor before in my life”.
Nine of the verified deaths occurred in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa valley region.
Three more people were killed in Afghanistan, according to a representative for the country’s health ministry. One of those murdered was a kid in the Laghman province, near the country’s border with Pakistan. Several families were enjoying the Persian New Year, or Norwuz, when the earthquake struck.
The afflicted areas’ remoteness and rugged terrain are likely to stymie relief and rescue efforts.
Phone connections have been disrupted, and landslides have blocked the roadway in Pakistan’s worst-affected Swat region.
