The governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke, has authorised the payment of a second batch of half-salary debt together with the July salaries for state employees.
According to The PUNCH, this was disclosed through a statement by the spokesperson for the governor, Olawale Rasheed, on Saturday.
He stated that the most recent payment was Adeleke’s third in accordance with the pattern set earlier in the year to pay the debt on a quarterly basis.
Rasheed recalled Adeleke promising to pay the salary debt in installments during the election campaign, adding that the administration inherited roughly N26 billion in half-salary debt and over N50 billion in pension-related debt from the previous administration.
While commenting on the payment, Adeleke restated his commitment to following the blueprint for the settlement of the inherited salary obligation.
The governor, who insisted that the template represented an agreement among all stakeholders on how to break free from the half-salary trap, went on to say, “I want to assure Osun workers that the payment is proceeding as scheduled.” Despite the fiscal constraints, we are emphasising worker welfare by repaying inherited debt in installments.
“As a government of the people, by the people and for the people, we will remain focussed on human development even as we work to upgrade our infrastructure and develop our local economy. “
