Operatives from the Adamawa State Police Command have apprehended a 26-year-old man, Shafiu Abdulkadir, for allegedly posing as a police officer and extorting money from unsuspecting members of the public.
The suspect, who resides in Anguwan Yelwa within the Yola North Local Government Area, was taken into custody on Thursday following a tip-off regarding his illicit activities.
According to The PUNCH, in a statement issued on Friday, the command’s spokesperson, SP Suleiman Nguroje, revealed that Abdulkadir had been targeting tricycle operators, known locally as Keke NAPEP riders, particularly around the Aliyu Mustapha Flyover and Jimeta Modern Market in Yola North LG.
“The arrest was a follow-up to the information regarding the activities of some vigilante men going around threatening and extorting Keke NAPEP riders,” Nguroje explained.
Upon his capture, law enforcement officials discovered Abdulkadir dressed in police camouflage trousers, a black shirt emblazoned with the words “Special Force,” and combat boots. This attire contributed to his deceptive appearance as an officer.
Nguroje emphasized that the suspect would face legal proceedings upon the completion of the investigation, underscoring the police command’s commitment to tackling impersonation and extortion within the community.
