The Adamawa State House of Assembly has taken steps to investigate the recent boat accidents in Yola South and Fufore Local Government Areas that resulted in the loss of 26 lives.
According to The PUNCH, the accidents have raised concerns about safety and transportation in riverine communities within the state.
Speaker Bathiya Wesley announced the formation of a seven-member committee to conduct a thorough investigation into the causes of these accidents.
The primary objective of the committee is to identify the root causes of these incidents and provide recommendations to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
The newly formed committee will be led by Mohammed Buba-Jijiwa. Other members include Kate Raymond-Mamuno, Suleiman Alkali, Umar Bobbo-Ismail, Japhet Hammanjabu, Kabiru Mijinyawa, and Moses Yarima.
The committee’s work will also involve engaging with local council chairpersons and community leaders to raise awareness about the importance of using lifejackets for safety during water travel.
The investigation aims to shed light on the circumstances surrounding these tragic accidents and to prevent further loss of life due to inadequate safety measures in riverine transportation.
The findings and recommendations of this committee will be eagerly anticipated by both the authorities and the affected communities.
The hope is that their efforts will help ensure safer riverine travel in Adamawa State.
