A 43-year-old teacher, David Yusuf, was arraigned in a Wuse Zone II Magistrates’ Court in Abuja on Tuesday, for flogging a female student.
He was charged with two counts of causing grievous harm without provocation and assault against a student of the Government Girls College, Kuje, FCT.
According to The PUNCH, Yusuf, a casual staff member at the college, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The police prosecutor, Mr. Edwin Inegbenoise, explained that the case was transferred from the Kuje Divisional Police Headquarters to the Criminal Investigation Department, FCT, for further investigation.
Inegbenoise stated that Henry Iortim, a resident of Union Homes Estate, Kuje, reported the case to the police.
According to the complainant, his 16-year-old daughter, who is a student at the college, was allegedly assaulted by the defendant on June 2.
The prosecutor detailed that during a night study session, the defendant reportedly flogged the victim with an iron rod, causing injuries to her palm and other parts of her body.
The charges against the defendant contravene sections 241 and 326 of the Penal Code.
Magistrate Abdulmajid Oniyangi granted the defendant bail in the sum of N2 million with two sureties in like sum. The sureties must reside within the jurisdiction of the court, and their addresses will be verified by the court’s registrar before the defendant’s release.
The case was adjourned until November 6 for a hearing and the presentation of witnesses by the prosecuting counsel.
