The Federal Road Safety Corps has confirmed that its emergency response team, in collaboration with the Fire Service and other first responders, successfully managed a gas truck fire at Otedola Bridge on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The accident, which occurred during peak traffic hours on Tuesday, involved multiple vehicles and resulted in two fatalities and five injuries.
In a statement on Wednesday, FRSC spokesperson Olusegun Ogungbemide attributed the crash to a mechanical failure, specifically brake failure in one of the vehicles. A total of 15 vehicles were affected, causing significant traffic disruption.
Reacting to the incident, FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed emphasized the need for stringent safety measures, particularly for vehicles transporting hazardous materials.
“This crash could have been prevented. I urge all fleet managers and drivers to take safety precautions seriously to avoid such tragic incidents,” he said.
Mohammed warned that failure to comply with road safety regulations would attract sanctions.
“Drivers and vehicle owners who disregard safety protocols put lives at risk. The FRSC will not hesitate to enforce the necessary penalties under the National Road Traffic Regulations,” he added.
He reassured the public that the FRSC remains committed to ensuring road safety and will continue to deploy resources and expertise to handle emergencies effectively.
The Corps Marshal also encouraged motorists to remain vigilant and report emergencies through the FRSC’s toll-free emergency number, 122.
