The death toll from the collapsed three-story building on Oriwu Street, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, has risen to four, according to an update from the Lagos State Police Command on Thursday.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the latest casualties in a statement.
“Two more dead bodies were brought out of the rubble this morning,” he said.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday around 4 p.m., had initially resulted in two confirmed deaths, while six individuals were rescued with severe injuries.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Authority responded swiftly after receiving distress calls through the state’s emergency lines. In a statement, LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Damilola Oke-Osanyitolu, detailed the agency’s immediate response.
“Following distress calls received via the CRM on the 767/112 Emergency Toll-Free Lines at 14:25 hours, LASEMA activated the State’s Emergency Response Plans,” he said. “Upon arrival at 14:48 hours, our response teams discovered that a three-story building under construction had collapsed.”
Oke-Osanyitolu added that the injured victims received urgent medical care from LASEMA’s Pre-Hospital Care Unit before being transferred to Marina General Hospital for further treatment.
While the exact cause of the collapse remains unknown, authorities have launched an investigation to determine the factors responsible for the disaster.
“Search and rescue operations are still ongoing,” Oke-Osanyitolu stated. “Our teams, alongside other emergency responders, are coordinating efforts at the site. Heavy-duty equipment, including excavators, have been deployed to aid the rescue mission.”
