The Lagos State House of Assembly has directed its staff and legislative aides to work remotely until further notice, citing concerns over safety due to an ongoing leadership crisis.
In a memo issued on Sunday, Acting Clerk Babatunde Abubakar instructed all Assembly employees, including those under the Lagos State House of Assembly Service Commission, to operate from home.
“This measure is necessary to ensure the safety of all staff members and prevent any potential violence arising from the leadership dispute,” the memo, titled Amendment to Remote Work Schedule Arrangement, stated.
The directive comes in the wake of a political standoff triggered by the ousting of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa and ex-Clerk Olalekan Onafeko on January 13, 2025.
Thirty-two lawmakers voted to remove Obasa, replacing him with his former deputy, Mojisola Meranda, who now serves as the Speaker.
Tensions escalated when operatives of the Department of State Services sealed off the Assembly complex, preventing legislative activities.
Lawmakers, however, forced their way into the chambers under tight security, held a session, and adjourned indefinitely while affirming confidence in Meranda’s leadership.
In a dramatic turn, Obasa rejected his removal, calling it unconstitutional. On February 27, he entered the Assembly complex with heavy security, forcefully took over the Speaker’s office, and resumed duties. His supporters have since camped outside the premises, demanding his reinstatement.
Meanwhile, three Assembly staff members are facing trial for allegedly assaulting DSS operatives during the standoff.
Reacting to the crisis, Lagos State Head of Service, Bode Agoro, affirmed the leadership change in a circular, urging staff to cooperate with the new Speaker and Acting Clerk.
Obasa has taken legal action against Meranda, the Assembly, and 36 lawmakers, challenging his removal. The Ikeja High Court has scheduled a hearing for March 7, 2025.
Despite the turmoil, the Assembly leadership has assured staff of their safety. “The Speaker remains committed to resolving this situation peacefully and ensuring a conducive work environment,” the memo assured.
