David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences, Uburu, in Ebonyi State’s Ohaozara Local Government Area, has taken disciplinary action against 14 students over various offenses, including examination malpractice, theft, and poor academic performance.
During the institution’s 4th matriculation ceremony on Saturday, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Jesse Uneke revealed the details of the sanctions.
According to him, two students were expelled for engaging in examination misconduct, while three others faced a one-year suspension for stealing.
Additionally, five students received a one-semester suspension for the same offense, and three were withdrawn due to unsatisfactory academic performance.
Uneke emphasized the university’s firm stance on discipline, urging students to prioritize their studies and steer clear of behaviors that could jeopardize their academic journey.
He reaffirmed the institution’s zero tolerance for misconduct.
Reflecting on the university’s growth, he noted that it began with just 26 students in 2021 but has since expanded significantly, now accommodating 2,496 students. This year alone, 990 new students have been admitted.
Speaking on the university’s healthcare contributions, Uneke disclosed that the institution’s cancer center has treated 200 patients from different parts of the country.
“The university cancer centre is fully operational and has treated 200 cancer patients coming from various parts of Nigeria as of December 2024. The services have been expanded in 2024 to include chemotherapy. The official flag-off of the centre will take place on March 8, 2025,” he stated.
Reiterating the university’s commitment to maintaining strict academic and moral standards, the Vice-Chancellor underscored that disciplinary measures were enforced as approved by the Senate.
“This university maintains very strict discipline; the university rules and regulations are unforgiving when they are violated,” he said.
