Ugandan authorities have launched an investigation into the tragic death of Nigerian footballer Abubakar Lawal, who reportedly fell from a third-floor balcony at Voicemall Shopping Arcade in Kampala.
The 29-year-old striker for Vipers Sports Club had gone to visit a Tanzanian friend, Omary Naima, at the mall when the incident occurred.
According to police reports, Naima had briefly left Lawal in her room, where he was preparing tea, before the fatal fall. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was later pronounced dead.
Lawal’s sudden passing has sent shockwaves through the football community, with his club, Vipers SC, expressing deep sorrow.
“Lawal (Man from Sokoto) was a unique person. He had a big heart of gold. He really cared about people and went out of his way to help. He was incredibly generous,” the club said in a tribute.
His former team in Nigeria, Nasarawa United, also mourned his loss, stating, “We mourn the sudden demise of our ex-player Abubakar Lawal earlier today. May God grant him eternal rest.” Ugandan footballer Mustafa Kizza added, “It’s hard to take in that you’re no more Lawal. A kind, talented, jolly, and loving person you have been. You will forever be missed bro.”
The circumstances of Lawal’s death remain unclear, with conflicting reports initially suggesting he had died in a motorcycle accident.
Police are now analyzing CCTV footage and conducting interviews to determine what exactly transpired.
Authorities have recovered some of the footballer’s belongings, including two smartphones, shoes, headsets, and his training kit.
“Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses,” police assured.
Lawal had been with Vipers SC since July 2022 following a two-year spell at AS Kigali in Rwanda.
His untimely demise has left many in shock, with tributes pouring in from teammates, fans, and football associations.
