Dutch champions, Ajax, have completed the signing of Super Eagles defender, Calvin Bassey, from Scottish giants, Rangers FC.
Bassey who played an active role in Rangers’ Europa League campaign last season where Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side finished as runners-up joined Ajax on a permanent deal until 2027.
According to respected Italian Sports Journalist, Fabrizio Romano, the deal is worth €22m fixed fee plus add-ons and a 10% sell-on clause.
The Super Eagles star replaces Argentine defender, Lisandro Martínez, who recently departed Ajax to reunite with his former manager, Erik ten Hag, at Manchester United.
“Ajax has reached an agreement with Rangers FC and Calvin Bassey for the transfer of the defender to Amsterdam.
“The English-Nigerian player has signed a contract with Ajax that will take effect immediately and will run for five seasons, until June 30, 2027. Ajax will pay a transfer fee of EUR 23 million to Rangers FC. Including variables, that amount could increase to EUR 26.5 million,” the club wrote on its official website.
Bassey becomes the seventh Nigerian international to play for the Dutch club after Nwankwo Kanu(1993-1996), Finidi George(1993-1996), Tijani Babangida(1996-2003), Christopher Kanu(1997-2002), Sunday Oliseh(1997-1999), and Pius Ikedia(1999-2005).
