The Enugu State University of Science and Technology Teaching Hospital has announced plans to dispose of more than 300 unclaimed corpses from its mortuary before the end of March.
This was revealed in a statement issued on Thursday in Enugu by the hospital’s Chief Medical Director, Prof. Bethrand Ngwu.
Ngwu called on individuals whose relatives or friends have been in the hospital’s morgue for six months or longer to come forward and claim the bodies.
“This announcement serves as a notice to anyone whose relative or friend’s corpse has stayed in the hospital for a period of six months or more, to proceed and claim it,” he said.
He further warned that failure to retrieve the corpses within three weeks of the announcement would result in their permanent disposal.
“Failure to do so within three weeks after this announcement means that all unclaimed bodies shall be disposed of permanently, and the hospital will not be held accountable,” he added.
According to the hospital, some of the corpses have been in the mortuary for over a year, while others have stayed for more than two years.
