The Federal Capital Territory , Police Command has recovered 125 stolen manhole covers in Abuja, reaffirming its determination to curb infrastructure vandalism in the city.
The recovery was made on February 4, 2025, during an intelligence-driven operation in the Dei-Dei area, where officers discovered the stolen covers concealed in a pit.
The breakthrough was made possible through a tip-off from a vigilant informant, highlighting the crucial role of public cooperation in combating crime.
In a statement, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, reiterated the command’s commitment to tackling infrastructure theft.
She quoted the Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, as saying that efforts are ongoing to track down criminals involved in the illicit trade.
“We will not relent in our search for stolen public assets. Our operatives are intensifying efforts to identify and dismantle illegal storage sites where vandals stockpile stolen infrastructure. The FCT must be free from the grip of these criminal elements,” Disu stated.
This latest operation follows a similar breakthrough last week when the police, in collaboration with the Joint Task Force set up by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, intercepted and recovered vandalized public infrastructure.
The police commissioner commended residents for their support and urged them to remain alert, emphasizing that safeguarding public assets requires collective effort.
He also encouraged citizens to report any suspicious activity using the designated emergency contact numbers.
